I love the use of color and they made me appreciate the beauty of the new blooming flowers of springtime. I have also looked into art therapy and its benefits because I suffer from depression, and I found that taking time to paint and draw helped me feel relaxed and peaceful. I took art all four years of high school and it was my absolute favorite class because I didnt have papers and assignments due every night and I could work at my own pace. I remember feeling satisfactio n when I finished a piece or did a really difficult or new art medium that I wasnt used to. I think that different forms of art are a necessary part to becoming a happier person because creating something gives you a new found sense of joy. I also found that being able to share my artistic creations with others and seeing the happiness that my art gave them made me feel happy all over again. Being able to appreciate writing and poetry also brings me happiness. My mom bought me a set of poetry books for Christmas last year and I am currently re-reading them all again. I also like writing poetry and it helps me to sort of map out my emotions when everything in my head seems like a chaotic mess. Music also gives me a happy feeling. Several of the presentations that have been given on music definitely resonated with me because when I listen to happy songs, I feel happier and more motivated. I also like playing my ukulele because it helps me relax when Im stressed. Growing up as a kid, m y grandmother had a piano in her living room. I never learned it play it, but as a kid, I liked strumming all the keys and humming little songs. My grandmother also used to sing me twinkle twinkle little star to help me sleep. I feel that being able to understand and appreciate different forms of art also enhance someones freedom and individualism. If someone grows up not knowing how to appreciate art, whether written, painted or musical, they cant appreciate all that life has to offer them. And being able to appreciate them in your own way, makes you the individual you are. I appreciate and see different things in a painting than my best friend would. We are both artistic and smart so we can appreciate the artwork in front of us, but we have different life experiences and central life interests so we see the same piece of artwork differently. So, when you combine the importance of the arts and the effects that they have on freedom and individualism, I feel that they directl y affect a persons pursuit of happiness because being able to freely express yourself will allow you a sense of happiness. I know that when I finish a piece of artwork or a poem, I feel accomplished and proud of myself and that makes me feel happy. I think luck plays some part in all of this because if you seek out happiness, you may not find it. But the chance or luck of being able to find happiness is the greatest reward of all, They have no assurance of success, no assurance that happiness is owed to them (Bok p.2). That quote from Exploring Happiness really resonates with me personally because when you suffer from depression, every day is a battle of its own and finding happiness in a bad day, even if it is as simple as watching the sunset, makes all the bad things fade away. The Appalachian Trail Essay When I was in the seventh grade, our class went on a field trip to Cherokee, North Carolina. The trip lasted four days and three nights, but the adventure would last a lifetime. The experience allowed me to learn many things about myself and to reflect on the beauty that was all around me. We departed at six-thirty in the morning, and I was so excited. I had never been away on a school trip for longer than a few hours. I tossed my purple duffel bag into the storage compartment, found my seat by the window, and prepared for what I knew would surely be an unforgettable adventure. When we finally arrived in the mountains, it was breathtaking. They were covered with trees, and the clouds floating over them were so beautiful. I looked down and saw valleys of flowers that went on forever. I was so anxious to get off the bus and roll in the grass with the clear, blue sky above my head. The bus came to a halt, and one by one we filed out into a parking lot. We grabbed our canteens and began the one-mile trail to the top of one of the mountains. I was one of the first people to reach the peak, and waiting for us was a notebook. We opened it to find the names of everyone who has ever reached the peak. I smiled to myself as I wrote in big letters Kim Walton and started back down the mountain. It was much easier and faster than going up, and everyone was really excited to see where we were going next. When we arrived at the Best Western, everyone grabbed his/her suitcases, quickly tucking them into the rooms as the candy shop across the street drew us in like moths to a flame. Afterwards, we went back to our rooms, put on our bathing suits, and went for a late-night swim under the stars. It was so cold, but we did not mind it because we were having so much fun. Later we went back to our rooms and went to sleep. Our next day would surely be packed with action and adventure. The next morning, we went to Alpine Tower: a seventy-five feet high vertical structure that is designed to help you work with others and test your physical strength as well as your bravery, motivation, and problem-solving strategies. Equipped with helmets, harnesses, and ropes, we took our places around the tower and prepared for the first person to go up. When it finally got to my turn, I climbed onto a log and started to work my way to the top. When I finally reached the peak, I walked over to the edge and strapped myself to a rope. As I got closer to the side, I could see how high up I was, so I turned around backwards and did a backflip off the tower. Everyone screamed, but I was flying. Nothing was holding me  down; I felt so free. The rope kept swinging in every direction and finally came to a stop where I was helped down with a ladder. Later that day, our tour group decided to whitewater rafting. We suited up and carried the gear down to the river where four rafts were waiting for us. We were traveling down the Nantahala River, which winds through the valleys of the Appalachian Mountains. The water was calm at first, so our guide began telling us a story about the Cherokee Indians. Looking around us, we could see caves where the Indians hid during their escape from the Pilgrims. The journey is known as the Trail of Tears. My great grandmother is a Cherokee Indian, so I was interested in the stories that were being told. Doctors recommended a full body radiation and bone marrow transplant. Mykalaya started her treatment but her parents noticed that she was not acting like herself she wasn’t happy. She didn’t want to eat, so her parent decided to try something different and started to treat her with cannabis. She takes two pills of cannabis oil twice a day which is equivalent to ten bong hits. She also eats it, in a brownie or lollipop, her parents also apply it to her skin in a lotion. Her parents say since she has started using medical marijuana she been more energized, a lot happier, and she has started gaining weight. For the community engagement part of my project, I had reached out to the Des Moines Latino Center where I met Joe Gonzalez. Joe works with many Latinos and does a lot of community outreach to help people and help them get their stories shared with the right people. Joe is also a former Lieutenant for the Des Moines Police Department. After meeting Joe, I can say that he is a great person and just wants to help others out in any way possible. He directed me to a family that he has been working with who has recently moved here from Mexico and has a story to share. This family consist of a young man at the age of 22 named Paul and his three sisters who are 13, 16, and 17 years old. I conducted an interview with Paul, his sisters, and Joe. We†¦show more content†¦For Paul, it all started about 10 years ago when his dad started working with the United States Government, DEA and the Mexican Government. He was doing computer work with cars that involved GPS and other tracking devi ces. They moved from different states in Mexico and the United States doing this work for awhile but mostly stayed in Mexico City, Mexico. Paul told me that he remembers Mexico as a safe place because there are not high crime rates in Mexico City, as it is a large city that holds the president and many other important officials. Paul told me that most of the cartels and violence happen in the rural areas that are smaller and easier to take over. About four years ago, things turned bad for Paul and his family as the cartels found out that he was working with government officials and the DEA. As Paul’s father actually worked on both sides of the conflict. While he was helping out the government, he was also running computer devices, secret compartments, etc. for cartels and gangs as well. When these gangs found out about this, they burned down his father’s shop and ever since then he has been on the run from these members. As soon as this started happening, Paul’s dad worked with the government to get his children here to the United States to keep them safe and out of harms way. This is how Paul and his sisters ended up here and how Paul was put as guardian of all of his sisters. His parents were supposed
